Pastel Drawings

These large scale pastel drawings were made originally as statements on world order but have become reflections of the evolving cycles of political power. The New World Order theme, echoed in popular culture of the 1990's, is represented here in different modes. The emerging dominance of digital imagery metaphorically structures that theme. I contemplated degrees of power measured from personal empowerment through corporate and government levels. In retrospect and considering the ongoing world conflicts, especially the Middle East and Persian Gulf Region, it appears that little has changed over time except the actors. For example, originally, Novus Ordor Seclorum, (left) represented the leaders of three powerful and influential countries, George H. W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev and Saddam Hussein. The piece is about world conflict, balance of power, authority and natural resources. Ultimately, each actor has been replaced multiple times but the conflicts of interest continue. From a current interpretation, the work seems to be more a testament to the notion that what is New is Old and that humanity continues to fail at understanding and conflict resolution.
